I paint to understand what it means to occupy a body in space. My work is autobiographical. I look at my family, my ancestors and my community to understand what we have become and how we have gotten here. Although I paint people, my work is not only of individuals. I look at the weight of a sitter’s presence in intimate discourse with his or her setting or environment, and seek to capture the experience of the self as viewed and interpreted, and the self as viewer and observer.
